Intelligent information management: indispensable for digital transformation

[acf field="subtitle"]

Organisations today face major challenges due to the many disruptive developments in the world. Particularly in the field of information management, markets are being shaken up. I would like to share 10 facts you need to know about these disruptive developments within information management and why this means that the old approach to content and information management no longer works.

The digital transformation journey

Every organisation is (or should be) in the process of digital transformation. At the heart of this transformation process is understanding, anticipating and redefining internal and external customer experiences and perceptions. AIIM, the global organisation that continuously researches the information management market, has presented some telling results.

Fact 1: More than 53% of organisations are "living on the edge" in terms of a potentially serious disruption in their business model.

Fact 2: 81% of organisations consider digital transformation important or very important for their organisation.

Fact 3: Just 18 months away from 2020, less than 1 in 5 organisations are near the core transformation challenge of "understanding, anticipating and redefining internal and external customer experiences".

Digital transformation effectiveness

The effectiveness of a digital transformation is compromised by increasing information chaos and confusion. Employees spend more and more time searching for information or the right version of information.

Fact 4: Despite significant improvements in information management capabilities over the past 10 years, organisations are only marginally responding to the new developments that come with the "Big Content".

Fact 5: The average number of content systems and solutions used by an organisation continues to rise. The average number of systems has grown by nearly 30% over the past five years.

Fact 6: While most organisations continue to increase the number of content systems they use, an increasing proportion of critical business content (now 54%) remains outside these systems.

Demand for new information management applications

Increasing information chaos and confusion is creating demand for new information management applications beyond traditional ECM.

Fact 7: In just three years, we have moved beyond the cloud 'tipping point'. Even for organisations that were initially sceptical (more than 8 in 10), cloud capabilities are now an important part of their solution.

Fact 8: For 70% of organisations, the monolithic model of the ECM era has been replaced by the desire to be able to use content capabilities (content services) where appropriate.

Fact 9: 92% of organisations think something needs to change and modernise their information management strategy.

Fact 10: Pricing and procurement models are changing dramatically from CAPEX to OPEX. 57% of organisations prefer subscription pricing models.

Organisations need to transform, and a modern approach to information management should be central to this. It leaves no doubt that if organisations do not commit to intelligent information management, you just have to hope that they will still have a reason to exist in a while.
